NGICP: Requirements, Fees & Processes

The National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) sets national certification standards for Green Infrastructure (GI) construction, inspection, and maintenance workers.

Professional Experience / Education Requirement

Category A: 0 to 1.99 years

Thirty-five (35) minimum hours of training. This can be completed either In-Person or Virtual or through Hybrid (nineteen (19) hours LMS and sixteen (16) hours), In-Person, Virtual or on-line training prepared by ECI. This training shall have a field or video component that shows construction, inspection, and maintenance techniques and practices for GI practices.

Category B: 2 years to 4.99 years

Minimum of nineteen (19) hours of training through LMS with a signed self-declaration of completion, or a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of In-Person or Virtual training. This training shall include a field or video component that shows construction, inspection, and maintenance techniques and practices.

If the candidate fails the exam more than two (2) times, the candidate will be required to re-take the on-line review or have a letter from an approved trainer that the candidate has been provided with the appropriate training.

Category C: 5 years or greater

Signed self-declaration including a description and photographs of Green Infrastructure projects that you have personally been involved in installation, inspection, and/or maintenance.

If the candidate fails the exam more than two (2) times, the candidate will be required to re-take the on-line review or have a letter from an approved trainer that the candidate has been provided with the appropriate training.

Post-Secondary Education Credit

ECI automatically awards maximum Education Credit for Qualifying Degrees (science, planning, and construction management) as shown in the program-specific sections below. Education Credit is awarded for non-qualifying degrees at the rate of one half a Qualifying Degree. Transcripts or ECI approved documentation are required. Education credit may also be awarded for professional licensure without a degree. Verification of license is required. ECI reserves the right to review various state licensing not listed to determine applicability.

NGICP Training

Applicants for the NGICP certification exam are required to complete a NGICP exam training course provided by an approved trainer. ECI is currently working with partners and our community of trainers to identify training opportunities to address the training requirement to coincide with the exam schedule.

Registrations for available exam trainings and exam administrations are noted on the events calendar. Additional options will be added as and when confirmed.

NGICP Training

Candidates may register for an NGICP Training event on the ECI Events Calendar.

Note: Students attending the Training Course must bring a copy of the NGICP Manual to the course. Applicants do receive a digital copy of the NGICP Manual when their application has been approved.

NGICP APPLICATION REQUIRED

To attend training, you must first apply and be approved for NGICP. Please refer to the NGICP Application Checklist for certification information and complete the application through the EnviroCert Candidate Management System (CMS)

Certification: Eligibility & Process

Applicants are not required to take the review courses to qualify for the exam process however applicants must apply to be eligible to sit for an exam.

Only approved candidates will be able to sit for the NGICP exam. Each candidate must complete the application process and pay the application fee of $125. The application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Using EnviroCert’s Certification Portal create an account and upload the requested information you gathered in Step 1. If you have previously created an account on the certification portal you do not need a new account for this certification, please use your existing log-in information.

On-Line Exams

Exams may be taken on-line with remote proctoring with Prometric. This will allow applicants to take the exam at their home or office with a reliable internet connection. Exams will be administered utilizing a remote proctor that will monitor the exam via your computer’s webcam.

In order to schedule an exam, you will need to complete an on-line exam request form. You must have an approved application before scheduling an exam.

Process for scheduling an exam with Prometric:

  1. Make sure you have an approved application before submitting a request.
  2. Submit your testing request through the Candidate Management System (CMS).
  3. ECI will confirm your eligibility and send an approval to Prometric within 24 business hours.
  4. You will receive an email with instructions to register and purchase the exam bundle.

In-Person Exams

ECI Exams may be taken at designated Prometric testing locations. You must have an approved application before scheduling an exam. Applicants are required to bring: No.2 pencils, clear ruler, eraser, and an authorized calculator. Calculators cannot have any of the following features:

  • Internet Capability
  • Photo or Video Camera Capability
  • Audio and/or Digital Recording Capability

Renewals must be completed annually via the Certification Portal. NGICP current renewal cost is $135. Renewals must be completed by the date shown on the Certified Professionals’ wallet card; late renewals are subject to a $75 late fee. When using a debit or credit card a $14.95 third party credit card fee will apply.

Registrants are responsible to participate in activities within their annual renewal period that satisfy the requirements for each certification they hold. NGICP Certified Professionals are required to complete 7 PDHs during their certification year. PDHs may be recorded in a log but must ultimately be added to each registrant’s NGICP Renewal Application. PDHs are required for successful renewal. Please review the Professional Development Policy for detailed explanation of qualifying courses. Each year a minimum of 1% of Certified Professionals PDH records are audited by EnviroCert.
