Washington Bill to Require Green Roofs

A bill is moving through the Washington Legislature, SB 5732, that would require all covered buildings to include a combination of solar energy panels and green roof covering 70 percent of the gross roof area in order to reduce energy consumption, improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the urban heat island effect, reduce stormwater runoff and urban flooding, improve food security, strengthen human health outcomes, and increase Washington state’s climate resilience. This bill was introduced in early January and is scheduled for executive session in the Senate Committee on Environment, Energy & Technology on February 2, 2022.
