On Thursday, 24 February 2022 Russia invaded the neighboring country, Ukraine. The assault was launched from Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia, along the northern border where Russian troops came in with permission from Russian ally territory Belarus, and from the south in Crimea. Crimea is previously a Ukrainian territory annexed by Russia in 2014. Over the past few weeks, Russian forces have made their way towards the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv (Kee-v), and inflicted significant damage to businesses, homes, and surrounding infrastructure. More tragically, there has been a significant loss of life. As the crisis unfolds, NATO forces stand by to protect refugees who have been able to cross the borders to safety and to prevent invasions into surrounding countries. There are an estimated 3.9 million refugees that have already fled the conflict and those numbers are expected to grow. 6.5 million have been displaced.
ECI Board of Directors, and Staff send our thoughts and best wishes to those who have been impacted by these devastating events.
