Professional Development Hours

Everything ECI-certified professionals need to keep certification active – the rules for earning PDHs, and a searchable directory of every approved provider, course and conference.

Part 1 – The rules

How Professional Development Hours work

Certified professionals complete contact hours of continuing education each renewal period, in addition to the annual renewal fee, to keep a certification active. Courses must come from an ECI-recognized provider (listed below).

When they must be earned

During the preceding renewal period - or the preceding two (2) years when reactivating a delinquent, lapsed, or inactive certification.

Acceptable content

Learning must be relevant to your certification and above the knowledge level required for it - and be robust, relevant, valid, and current.

Scientific & technical scope

Basic and advanced courses in the physical and natural sciences, plus hydrology, engineering, and other specialty areas.

Independent study limit

Up to one-half (½) of your annual PDHs may come from independent study through approved sources.

Ethics courses

Up to two (2) of the required PDHs may be obtained by taking ethics-related courses.

College / University / Military

Technical courses from an accredited college/university or the military count as approved credit: 1 quarter unit = 16 PDHs, 1 semester unit = 24 PDHs (carry-over allowed with ECI pre-approval).

Only approved providers

ECI will not accept PDHs from groups or organizations not listed in this directory. New providers can apply with the PDH Request Form.

Approval ≠ endorsement

ECI reviews and approves providers and content, but such approval does not constitute endorsement of the course content.

Part 2 – Paperwork

Forms you'll need

Two (2) forms cover almost every situation – declaring independent study where no completion certificate exists, and requesting that a new provider be added to the approved list.

Self-Declaration Form (V6)

For classes and conferences that don’t issue a certificate of completion or independent study. Upload it to the Certification Management System on or before renewal.

PDH Request Form

For groups, organizations or conferences that want to be added to the approved list. Submit to communications@envirocert.org for review. ECI won’t accept PDHs from providers not listed here.

Audits of certified professionals

Random audits of certified professionals are conducted regularly. All certified professionals are subject to random audits of PDH compliance. You are required to keep certificates and appropriate documentation for three years as proof of PDH completion in the event of an audit.
