EnviroCert International, Inc. (ECI) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of John Peterson, P.E., M.P.A., J.D., CPESC, who passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026.
For nearly forty-five (45) years, John devoted his time, intellect, and leadership to advancing the mission of strengthening the industry, the practice of erosion and sediment control, stormwater quality, watershed management, and soil conservation.
John served over fifteen (15) years on the EnviroCert Board of Directors, providing steady leadership, thoughtful counsel, and a deep commitment to the organization’s mission of advancing professional competence and environmental stewardship. His experience at the federal and state levels of government and contributions shaped this international organization during some of its most formative decades, during challenging periods, and helped establish the professional standards that guide the industry today.
John was a colonel in the U.S. Army and also an Army Ranger (with over 200 parachute jumps), a Professional Engineer, and with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (now NRCS), where he served in several senior leadership roles. His career reflected a lifelong dedication to conservation, engineering excellence, and public service. Many of these contributions are presented in the following NRCS video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpK-bgNMvQA, and I think you will find this video a fascinating summary of some of his accomplishments.
In his later years, John continued contributing as the Executive Director of the National Watershed Coalition, amongst other personal and professional endeavors (IECA, LICA, and SWCS) which gave him the opportunity to share nearly six (6) decades of practical knowledge with practitioners across the country. Yet despite his many professional accomplishments, those who knew him best remember him not only for his credentials, but for his character.
EnviroCert President and CEO Robert Anderson reflected on John’s legacy:
“John was a man whose legacy required no embellishment in death. The breadth of his accomplishments and the strength of his character spoke for themselves. John was always a leader and an example of what both a professional and a friend should be. Above all else, he consistently placed EnviroCert first. For the past twelve (12) years, he pushed me to elevate my efforts and work harder on behalf of the organization.
I cannot count the number of phone calls we shared where he offered advice, pressed me on important policy matters, shared his thoughts on the organization’s direction, or provided the kind of firm guidance that only a trusted mentor can give. I will miss John immensely and I wish I could find the words to accurately pay tribute to his contributions to the industry, the organization, and to me personally.”
Those who served with John describe him not only as a mentor, but a trusted advisor, and friend. He was someone who held the highest expectations for professional integrity while always offering encouragement and support to those around him.
In recognition of his efforts within the industry and to the profession, EnviroCert established the “John Peterson Volunteer of the Year Award” in 2017, honoring the same spirit of service and commitment that John demonstrated throughout his decades of involvement.
John helped guide ECI through various phases of growth, industry changes, and evolving environmental challenges. His voice carried weight because it was grounded in experience, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the mission.
Beyond titles and achievements, John will be remembered most for the personal relationships he built throughout the profession. He was a councilor and guide to many and a trusted friend to all that had the privilege of working with him.
To honor his life and service, ECI leadership will travel to Virginia to attend John’s funeral and pay their respects on behalf of EnviroCert and the broader professional community he helped shape.
The EnviroCert community extends its deepest condolences to John’s wife, Blanche, his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable example. His contributions will not be forgotten, and his example will continue to guide us.
Thank you, John. Your service, friendship, and leadership will endure. Most of all, you will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to work with you.
